Spoonbill

Click to see the original image The Spoonbill is a long-legged wading bird. Its height is 90 cm (36"). Its body is predominantly white, except for its red legs, face, and bill. Its wing is 365-403 mm long. This bird can be easily identified by its uniquely spoon-shaped bill. At birth, the Spoonbill's bill does not resemble a spoon. It is born with a short beak, that gradually develops into its spoon-like shape. It usually resembles a spoon right before it is time to leave its nest. Both the male and female birds are similar in appearance.

Click to see the original image The Spoonbill is usually a shy and alert bird. It is usually found singly, but can also be encountered in pairs or in groups. It is usually silent, except for an occasional grunt when alarmed. This bird travels by flight. It flies with its neck and legs extended, while flapping its wings steadily in the air. The Spoonbill feeds by fishing in shallow water. It fishes for its food by swinging its open bill from side to side in the water. Its bill acts as a scythe (hooked tool) to catch its food. The places that you may see the Spoonbills are: Manyas Bird Paradise (Balikesir) and The Sultan Sazligi Reedfield (Kayseri). Providing shelter for 301 bird species, Sultan Sazligi is the second major bird paradise in Turkey, after the lake Manyas. An observation tower and a breeding station have been set up so that the migration route of birds and their living environments can be studied. Bird Paradise (Bird Lake)- Located in the northern part of Manyas Country,west of Susurluk-Bandirma highway Area : 16,200 ha., reaching as much as 20,000 ha. at high water level. The lake extends in a east-west direction to the south of the Sea of Marmara and is located at the western tip of extensive fault area containig Lake Ulubat in the east. The lake, formerly known as Lake Manyas, extends in a east-west direction. The lake and its environs provide a breeding, alighting, wintering and feeding ground for over 200 species of birds.
